About Bronwyn Hegarty

I am a Clinical Psychologist with an open and compassionate style.  I work with adults who are experiencing emotional difficulties, mood and anxiety disorders, stress, trauma, and interpersonal issues.

I primarily work within the framework of relational psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is a talking therapy that focuses on how past and present relationships shape your thoughts, feelings and patterns of relating, and how this impacts upon your emotional wellbeing.   â€‹This is a longer-term form of therapy - clients will typically see me for at least 6-12 months.  Sessions are weekly or fortnightly.

In sessions, we will pay close attention to what happens between us in the moment and use this to better understand how you tend to connect, pull back, protect yourself, and respond to others, and gently explore these patterns as they arise.  Over time, this process can support you to develop more secure and authentic ways of relating to yourself and to other people,  reduce long‑standing distress and help you build a more stable and flexible sense of who you are and how you live.

Where appropriate, I  incorporate tools and strategies from other evidence-based treatment modalities including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

I come to the practice of clinical psychology by way of a previous career in medical research (BSc, PhD). My career change was driven by a desire to engage more directly with people and help them to live happier, more fulfilling lives. My training in basic science and knowledge of physiology provide a unique perspective that, I believe, enriches my clinical work.   I enjoy a commitment to lifelong learning and am continually working to expand my skills to help me help my clients.
